Things learned from Scott Douglas's memoir "Quiet, Please: Dispatches from a Public Librarian: Librarians don't read. Storytelling librarians don't have kids, nor do they particularly want them. Many are bitter nutcases or technophobes. Douglas, who has labored at the Anaheim Public Library off and on since 2001, peppers his descriptions of office betrayals and unusual bathroom incidents with anecdotes about libraries of yore. The book is hilarious and oddly moving but leaves one wondering why Douglas sought a life among the shelves in the first place.
