How to Watch a
DVD on Your Pocket PC and/or Smartphone
To watch a movie
on your PocketPC, PSP, or Smartphone, make sure and
have DVDx
and
Microsoft Media Encoder on your computer. This
conversion is pretty easy to do, but it takes a lot
of uninvolved time, so you might want to do it at
night, and just let your computer do the conversion
while you're sleeping. You'll also want a decent
speed on your computer; I tried it on an old 550mhz
processor and it took about 6 hours to convert a 1.5
hour movie to MPEG, and another hour to convert it
to the Media player format (a P4 processor should be
able to do it in about 2 or 2.5 hours). Also
remember that the Media player version of the file
is a low resolution met for a small screen...you can
watch it on a regular computer, but the picture will
be very poor. So let's get started.
|
Open up DVDx. Click "File"
and click on "Open DVD Root." Select the
file that matches the length of the movie.
After you click on "Select" a new box will
open up that says "Input Settings." (see
below picture) The Settings should be fine,
so click "OK." Once you get used to it, you
might want to experiment with a few
different settings.
 |
You might get an error
message; that's okay...just select "OK."
Next click on "File" and then click on
"Select output." This is where you name the
file and select where you want to put it.
 |
|
Now select "Settings"
on the top menu, and click on "Output
settings." (see below picture) There's a few
things you need to change here. First, the
default setting is "Super Video CD (MPEG2);"
that's too much for what you're doing, so
click on it and select "Video CD (MPEG1)."
Second, under "Export Settings," you'll see
an option that says "Max frame"....click the
button that says "Whole." That should be
good this time around so click on "Apply."
 |
Finally, click on the
encode
button on the bottom of the screen. Your
set. Now sit back and wait for it to
encode...and wait...and wait...then go watch
TV while you wait some more.
|
|
After DVDx has finished
the encoding, open up the Microsoft Media
Encoder. You'll get the dialog box below
upon opening the program. Click on Convert a
file and select "OK."
 |
Next a new box will
open up (see below picture) that allows you
to browse and open up the file, and select
the destination location for the new file.
Fill this in and select next.
 |
|
Select "Pocket PC" from
the list of available options, and click
"Next." Continue to click "Next" until you
receive the option to click on "Finish."
That's basically it. Now let the program do
it's encoding. |
When the program is all
finished, find the file, and load it onto
whatever your Pocket PC or SmartPhone takes
(CompactFlash, SmartMedia, etc.), put the
card into the device, open up the Windows
Media Player on that device, select the
file, and sit back and enjoy the flick. |
