How to Convert a DVD to DVD-r

Okay, first things first, get yourself a copy of DVD Shrink (you'll also need to have a DVD-R drive on your computer, a good processor, hard drive, and at least 256 MB of RAM). I also recommend you buy Nero on your computer.

Now that you have it installed, go ahead and double click on the icon. You'll get a program that looks like this:

Next up click on the "Open Disc" button on your toolbar. You'll see a dialog box pop up like the one below. Select the drive that contains your DVD, and click "OK."

Now you'll see a screen similar to the one below. If it is a older "Single" layer disc, then chances are you'll be able to copy a perfect copy of the movie (skip the next 2 steps). If it's newer one with lots of extra features, then you'll have to re-author the disc.

To re-author a disc, click on the "Re-author" button on the tool bar. Now you'll have a screen that looks like the one below. Go to where it says "Title 1" right under the "Main Movie" subject heading. Right click it, and select add. Now look at the green like...if you don't see ANY white space at the end, you should probably compress it further.

To compress it further, select the Compression settings tab. There's probably a couple audio tracks. You only need one of them (likely the first one). Under Video, look at the percentage it says; the closer to 100% the better. If it's too low, then you'll want to put it on two discs.

If you have Nero installed, then you're pretty set. If not, then you'll have to figure out this next step yourself. All you need to do now is select where you want to store a temp version of the movie, and select the drive where you're DVD-r is located, then click "OK." It will take about 30 to 60 minutes to do the burn.

Now pop it in your DVD player and enjoy.
